✅ Our guides follow established protocol for handling emergencies on the mountain, including rescue and evacuation procedures. We strive to be a steward of ethical porter treatment, committed to improving the working conditions of the porters in Kilimanjaro. Porters make the trips happen behind the scenes, so their welfare is a priority. Our climbs are staffed with a sufficient number of porters to limit their loads to 25 kg per porter. Our porters are paid one of the highest salaries on the mountain, so they do not depend solely on tips, which can lead to begging, harassment or theft. Every climb departs with an ample food supply so that porters are well fed for the duration of the trip. Tents are examined after every trip and repair any leaks or flaws that would compromise the porters’ shelter. Lastly, our porters have adequate clothing for the harsh mountain climate.

✅ Many tour operators on Kilimanjaro do not have adequate standards for their porters. Porters have the hardest jobs on the mountain yet are the ones most commonly exploited. Many operators simply do not care about the welfare of their porters, and worse, some intentionally engage in unfair and unethical practices when dealing with porters. Other companies may make claims of ethical treatment of porters, but do not uphold their words. Please select your operator with porter welfare in mind. We will happily put our standard of service and our client satisfaction ratings against any of our competitors. 96% of the operators out there do not even come close, while the others will charge you far higher prices for the same level of service.

Our Kilimanjaro guides are very experienced, with most having climbed well over 100 times. They are professionals who intimately know the mountain.

You can expect the following from our Kilimanjaro guides:

  • High Safety Standards – Your safety is the highest priority for us. Our clients put their lives in our hands and trust us to keep them safe; we do not take that responsibility lightly. Our guides are certified Wilderness First Responders (WFR), which means they have the tools to make critical medical and evacuation decisions. They receive annual training in emergency first aid and can prevent, recognize and treat altitude-related illnesses. Additionally, they can identify and avoid potential hazards such as slippery trails and loose rocks. Each client’s health is monitored very closely while on the mountain.
  • Professionalism – We understand that you have many choices when it comes to climbing Kilimanjaro. Therefore it is of the utmost importance that your expectations are met or exceeded. As part of our ongoing commitment to ensuring that our guide’s knowledge is continually evolving, all guides are enrolled in our internal mentoring program and are required to attend compulsory scheduled continuing education programs. Our teams work together often. This familiarity creates a strong team dynamic amongst the staff and with the clients, making the days on the mountain more fun and safer as well.

Our guides can effectively manage our clients due to the high guide to client ratio of our groups. Because each climber generally needs a few porters, each additional client multiplies the number of people in the entire party. Therefore, we staff additional guides to ensure that each client receives individualized attention. This way, our guides can effectively monitor the progress each individual climber and the collective group. Our guides have the opportunity to interact with each climber to assess how he or she is doing, and to ask and answer questions when needed. Our porters can also provide better service by catering to the varied needs of each member.

BookmySafary maintains a fully operational workshop at our base in Dar es Salaam. Staffed with a team of qualified mechanics, auto electricians, welders, panel beaters and spray painters, we are equipped to swiftly deal with any mechanical repairs that may arise. We realize that for many of our customers this is a trip of a lifetime and so we are committed to ensuring that we can deal with any disruptions swiftly and get you on your way again.

Vehicles designed with safety, comfort and convenience in mind

BookmySafary is focused on ensuring that your once in a lifetime experience is memorable for the right reasons and not the wrong. We have specifically designed our large fleet of Land-cruiser and Land-rover vehicles to maximize your safety, game viewing experience, comfort and convenience whilst on safari. We have thought long and hard about what is required in a vehicle to ensure you experience is memorable for all the right reasons.

Safety

All vehicles are equipped with seat belts for all children and adults on board, fire extinguishers, comprehensive first aid kits, 2 way radios and cell phones so our drivers can maintain 24 hour contact with national park headquarters and the BookmySafary team if in need of urgent assistance. Battery powered refrigeration is fitted into each vehicle ensuring your drinks, snacks and foods stay safely chilled for the duration of your safari. Bottled water is provided to all guests when on game drives.

Mechanically Superior Vehicles

Prior to your safari, your vehicles will be checked from bonnet to boot, tyre to rooftop by our BookmySafary mechanical staff and driver guides to ensure that they are in good condition before setting out on safari. Obviously, because of the very nature of our business and the roads that we travel we still occasionally have problems. When this happens, BookmySafary has well established contingency procedures to ensure that the interruption to your safari is minimized because of mechanical problems.

360° Game Viewing

All vehicles are custom designed with pop-up roofs so you can enjoy 360 degree viewing of wildlife whilst on your safari. The pop-up roofs also provide protection from the sun on the hotter days so you can enjoy the scenery in comfort.

P.A Systems for Clear Communication on Safari

There is no use having the best guide on safari if you cannot hear them. BookmySafary is the only company in Tanzania that has taken this important issue into consideration as we have installed public address systems in all of our vehicles so your guide will always be able to communicate clearly no matter where you are sitting.

Designed for Comfort and Convenience

All of our safari cruisers or safari Land-rovers either have 5 seat or 7 seat configurations to cater for the single enthusiast right through to large family / travel groups. These configurations guarantee that everybody has a window seat and access to the photographic roof hatch at all times during the safari. For additional comfort and convenience all vehicles are fitted with extra dust proofing, 12 Volt inverter plugs to keep your cameras, torches and computers charged throughout your safari, drink holders for those bumpy roads, refrigerators, binoculars and a selection of field guides to satisfy even the most inquisitive enthusiast.

Our Certification & Insurance

Your safety is our number one priority

Many safari companies currently operate in Tanzania without a Tourism Agent License (TALA). This is a license issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism of Tanzania and is only issued to companies that meet the strict operating requirements set out in the Tourism Act. The Act focuses on the safety requirements of a company whilst on safari, professional conduct of the company and its staff in relation to the handling of tourists and whether the company adheres to the rules and regulations of operation in the National Parks ensuring that companies have minimum negative impact on the environment. Companies that fail to qualify for a TALA license cannot legally carry tourists, which means all insurances carried by the company and travel insurance of guests in considered “Null and Void”.

BookmySafary.com has a current TALA License, all guests are covered by our public liability insurance (AON), all vehicles are comprehensively insured and we have emergency evacuation systems put in place to ensure that we can deal with any emergencies that could arise.

Kilimanjaro Insurance

Trekking to the summit of Kilimanjaro carries with it certain inherent risks. Chief among these is the risk of altitude sickness. It’s a good idea to look into travel insurance before your journey. Make sure your insurance covers trekking up to 6,000 meters, which does not come standard in most travel insurance packages.

Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project

Your mountain porters are an essential part of every trek up mount Kilimanjaro, not just because of the intense physical work they do in carrying all of the equipment and climber luggage, but because of the passion and spirit they bring to your trek, offering constant encouragement and smiles.

BookmySafary.com values the porters and the entire mountain crew, and is committed to their fair treatment, through our partnership with the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP). KPAP is a locally registered NGO, work underneath the International Mountain Explorers Connection (IMEC) Partner for Responsible Travel, a U.S. based organization.

To maintain our partnership, we must adhere to the following:

✅ All crew are paid at least the minimum daily wage

✅ Porter loads do not exceed 20 kg / 50 lbs.

✅ Tipping recommendations are given to all clients and tips are disbursed transparently to the crew

✅ Our staff is paid more than the standard compensation on Kilimanjaro. In fact, we are the highest paying mid-range KPAP partner company operating on Mount Kilimanjaro.

✅ Porters are provided with three meals per day and drinking water on the mountain

✅ Porters are provided comfortable sleeping conditions on the mountain

✅ Ill or injured porters are descended and provided with treatment

✅ Adhere to all local and national government standards

Kilimanjaro Search and Rescue

Kilimanjaro SAR is the first and only helicopter-based search and rescue company in Tanzania. From Mount Kilimanjaro, Mount Meru or Tanzania’s National Parks, clients can be rescued within minutes in cases of the most serious emergencies, especially those related to acute mountain sickness. In addition to the rescue, SAR runs a High-Altitude Medical Clinic where clients can receive 24-hour care upon descending from the mountain.

The Ultimate Kilimanjaro Experience

The guides and porters were simply great during the whole trip. Joseph watched us very carefully throughout the climb and made it a point to talk to us constantly to make sure we were fine. He was a big help to all of us, especially on summit day. We were most impressed by the work the porters do. They carried so much more stuff than we did (on their heads!) and were able to run ahead of us and set everything up so we literally didn’t have to do anything at camp.

Much of our success is attributable to the wonderful staff. The climb was tough, and I hated it at the time when I was tired, cold and hungry, but after, I felt a great sense of accomplishment. Would I do it again? Yes, and I would recommend it to anyone.
